Mr Wai Kin Fu, who owned Taste of the Orient in Warwick Road, was fined £2,000 for seven separate hygiene offences at Nuneaton Crown Court on Tuesday July 19.

Warwick District Council was awarded £500 in costs and Fu also ordered to pay a £120 victim surcharge fee.

Fu’s takeaway was visited in November 2015 by two district council officers who carried out a hygiene inspection.

Upon searching the premises, they found a variety of serious hygiene issues.

The offences included evidence of rodents in the food store, a lack of running hot water and hand soap at the wash hand basin as well as the restaurant’s sinks, a failure to implement food safety management, a lack of disinfectants and a failure to keep both the premises and food and hand contact surfaces clean.

The officers felt the takeaway’s hygiene was so bad that it presented an imminent risk to public health, and the restaurant voluntarily closed for two days to try and sort the problems out.

The district council’s portfolio holder for health and community protection Cllr Moira-Ann Grainger said: “We would like to use this case to highlight to all involved in the district’s food businesses that the health and safety of our residents is always our priority.

“Therefore enforcement action will be taken when serious breaches of legislation are discovered and there is blatant disregard for food hygiene.”

Taste of the Orient now has a new owner. Its last hygiene inspection was in July and received a three out of five rating, meaning ‘generally satisfactory.’
