Leamington man arrested after ‘bogus cop’ sexual assault

A Leamington man has been arrested after a woman in Rugby was alledgedly assaulted by a man posing as a police officer.

A woman in her 30s was allegedly assaulted on a road near to Blooms garden centre near Rugby on June 26 after being stopped by a man posing as an officer.

On Thursday, a 39-year-old man from Leamington was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault by touching. He was later released on conditional bail.

Anyone with information to the alleged assault should contact police on 101.

Following the incident, which occurred around 11.30pm, police put out assurances to residents.

Detective Inspector Neil Candelent said: “We urge that anyone concerned about the validity of a police officer should ask to see their warrant card and contact the police contact centre on telephone 101 to confirm their identity.

“A genuine police officer will always be happy for their identity to be verified.”
