Major Kenilworth road closure postponed for another week

A 250-metre stretch of Coventry Road will be closed off to traffic from outside Crackley Crescent up to Crackley Cottages while a new sewer is installed.

Instead of going ahead on Monday, work will now start on July 20 to avoid disruptive roadworks around the A46 and the Whitley Jaguar Land Rover site.

The work by Severn Trent Water was originally due to start in January, but delayed to avoid adding to disruption from roadworks at Gibbet Hill and the University of Warwick.

Wayne Ellis from Severn Trent Water apologised for expected disruption, but described the £300,000 worth of work as vital to prevent flooding into houses.

“The sewers in the area are no longer able to cope during heavy rainfall, and, in the past when we’ve had a lot of rain, sewage has backed up through pipes and flooded into homes and gardens,” he said.

“This is unacceptable and it’s our job to stop it which is why it’s so important to replace the sewers.

“Unfortunately, because of the nature of the work, there will be some impact on traffic.

“We are sorry for any problems this will cause but we want to work with the community to try and make our work as painless as possible for them.”

Existing roadworks along the A46 have this week caused major delays during morning and evening rush hours, leaving traffic at a standstill for hours.

A statement from Warwickshire County Council assured that vehicular access to affected houses will be “maintained where possible” during the ten weeks.

An alternative route is recommended via New Street, Bridge Street, Priory Road, Waverley Road, Warwick Road, St Johns, Leamington Road, the A46 and onto Stonebridge Highway.
