Milverton joyrider crash highlights the dangers of speeding in village

JOYRIDERS crashed a car into a telegraph pole in Old Milverton causing telephone lines to be knocked out for almost a week.

Nobody was hurt despite the damage but villagers have said the incident highlights the dangers of driving at speed into the village along Sandy Lane or Old Milverton Road.

Yvette Liening heard the crash outside her house and took photographs of the incident, which took place on August 31 at about 9.30pm.

She said: “The first thing that came to my mind was swear words because they had obviously been driving way too fast, nothing else had caused the crash but sheer speed.

“I then hoped everyone was all right because you wouldn’t wish that on anyone.

“I was glad nobody else was hurt because somebody else could’ve been hit.”

Both Mrs Liening and fellow villager Ezme Goldingay are concerned about the speeds at which normal motorists drive through the village, which they say is used as a “rat run” during rush hours.

Mrs Goldingay wants Warwickshire County Council to install electronic speed control signs near the sharp bends in the village to remind drivers of the 30mph limit.

She said: “I just get concerned about this issue because until somebody dies nothing gets done.

“It could be one of us walking on the pavement who gets crashed into next.”

Graham Stanley, senior engineer for the county council’s traffic projects team, said a proposal to review the speed limit through the village has been approved by the safety and maintenance budget 2011-12 and the team is aiming to have completed the review by March.

Residents are also being encouraged to raise concerns at the next North Leamington Community Forum.

Three men, aged 19, 20 and 21, were arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking without consent and property damage shortly after the joyriding incident.

They have been released on police bail pending further enquiries.
