Cast championships in a better light

This month we have been privileged to witness some outstanding bowling at the Bowls England Women’s National Championships which were once again held at Leamington, as they have been for the past 36 years.

The ladies again demonstrated their love of our town and the facilities provided, not only in the town itself but also in the district and they injected considerable capital into the area with their use of our hotels, shops, restaurants and hostelries, many of them together with their husbands. The greens presented to them by the local authority and their first class green-keepers were better than they have been for many years and huge tributes were paid to them by most of those taking part. Because of the good weather there were very large crowds to support those competing, particularly during the middle weekend which was dominated by the exuberance of the younger element in the sport.

I therefore find it very disappointing that your photo editor missed the opportunity to publish some wonderful photographs to publicise our town and to encourage even more people to attend, but instead managed to find one to spread across the back page which showed a group of people huddled under umbrellas on one of the few occasions that we had rain.

Surely you can do better than this because it is the second year running that you have depicted the negative rather than promoting the positive. It shows our local paper in very poor light. - Richard Ashley, via email.
