Disgraceful loss of public amenity

I wish to express our dismay on finding that the main Leamington post office is being closed down and the services relocated to the Bath Street Spar supermarket. This was apparently following a public “consultation”.

Not only is this a disgraceful loss of a public amenity but I wonder how this reflects on our town that we no longer have a central post office? The grand and beautiful purpose-built post office building is a prominent feature of town life and has been our central post office since the 1870s. We have already lost so many branch post offices including our local Milverton branch and we now have to go even further for a diminished service.

I presume the building will no doubt be flogged for a huge profit and converted into a set of luxury flats that no one needs or locally can afford to buy. This is a familiar tale given the fate of the community library, where a public asset has been sold off and is now lost forever to more luxury flats.

The building should be protected as a listed building and the post office should stay put as a public service.
