Fill all the empty shops first

On July 29 your paper reported that the council in their wisdom were to revisit the proposed idea of Clarendon Arcade, which was originally planned for the area bewteen Warwick Street and Clarendon Avenue.

Once again the council in its wisdom, has decided to reintroduce the white elephant known as the Clarendon Arcade, with an estimated cost at the moment of £28,000,000. We all know that by the time the arcade is completed, that this estimate may well exceed £40,000,000.

Well I ask, do we really need this arcade (waste of money), I think not. So today I while walking round the town, I decided to count the empty shops, within an area between Clarendon Street to the Parade, and Warwick Street to Augusta Place. I counted approximately 36 empty shops. In this estimate, I gave the now derelict Regency Arcade the value of 12 shops. There were also shops, that could easily be turned into two or even three shops. So my estimate of 36, could be on the low side, proving even more that extra shops are not required in this town.

From this small survey of my own, it showed me that the additional shops planned by the council were not required by Leamington Spa.

I know in the past the contractor stated that Leamington needed extra shops, I ask who will benefit from extra shops? Not Leamington, but definitely the contractor.

Leamington should sort out the empty shops before building more, this is only common sense. Is there any common sense within the council? - Colin Baker, via email.
