Is Warwick so much different today?

I read the ‘future of Warwick’ piece (Courier last week) that predictably included the suggestion of increased restrictions on vehicle use in Warwick.

I would like to sound a note of caution- successful towns are often bustling, congested, and indeed slightly dirty places. I suspect Warwick on market day 200 years ago was just as packed with horse and carts, hand barrows and people as it is of cars, 4x4s and people today.

We already have the perverse situation where large supermarkets provide ample free car parking, yet those visiting town centre businesses are disincentivised by charging for even brief stays.

I for one would not support further charging but I do think the method of blurring the distinction between who has the right of way between vehicles and pedestrians as already employed on Swan Street is worth extending if the aim is to reduce the dominance of vehicles. - Guy Hodgson, Lakin Road, Warwick.
