Leaks jeopardise security

The constant tragic news from the Middle East brings home to me, as a retired Foreign Service officer, our need for strong Intelligence Services and Special Forces.

The US Defence Secretary, Chuck Hagel, has emphasised the threats to us all from extremists of different kinds. This is in line with the unprecedented recent warning to Parliament by the heads of GCHQ, the Security Service and SIS of the damage caused by leaks of information by, for example, Edward Snowden.

We all want freedom of information, but these are dangerous times. Our Intelligence Services and Special Forces are crucial to our safety and their work should not be impeded.
