Optimistic view of the future

I love the optimism of Robert Collins’ article “The next wave of employment” in last week’s Kenilworth Weekly News. He sets the scenario in 2030 and he mentions “new trains....built 20 minutes away in Derbyshire”. However the reality is that if HS2 goes ahead in its present format for commisioning in 2026, the trains will almost certainly be built in Germany and the track and associated works will probably be installed by the Chinese.

Philip Hammond who has been driving HS2 forward has now departed to the MOD and has been replaced by Justine Greening as Secretary of State for Transport. We must persuade her to cancel this scheme.

If, as Robert Collins suggests, we can have “trains designed developed at Warwick University [making] trips to the capital in 40 minutes” let us wait a few years. I am intrigued by his statement that “high speed rail resulted in the collapse of all five mainstream political parties”. Who is running the country? Is Robert Collins going to lead a coup? - Malcolm Trewick, Farmer Ward Road, Kenilworth.
