Proud of my town but angry at decision

As a Leamington resident of many years and feeling rightly proud of my beautiful town, I was both saddened and angered by the Tory council’s agreement to the opening of a sex establishment in Court Street clearly against the wishes of local residents.

Though I don’t live near the proposed site, I care about the reputation of my town and the regeneration of South Town which has long languished in the shadow of the more prosperous north. I cannot see how such a business will enhance the area for local residents or attract potential investors into it, unless they too wish to take advantage of the council’s lax attitude in order to open more sex clubs. Then South Town will truly deserve the appellation “Sleaze Town” as coined by Cllr Alan Wilkinson.

Furthermore, I am not persuaded by solicitor Ian Besant’s argument that the sex club, “ will be an expensive club with expensive wine, vodka and cocktails”, as if this validates its existence, notwithstanding that its primary function is to sell sexual services in a residential area of our town.

As your previous correspondents, Nick and Meg Bond urged, I too wish the councillors who have voted in favour of this proposal to identify themselves and defend their decision in the face of so much opposition. To blatantly disregard valid local opinion in favour of a business, which many believe will taint the area, further undermining its viability for regeneration, shows complete arrogance and indifference to the concerns of the community. - K.
