Shame to let building keep on rotting

I read your piece in the Courier last week about the convenience store put forward by Sainsbury’s at the junction of Willes Road and Radford Road in Leamington.

Personally I feel this is a brilliant idea which will bring much more life to that dead end of town. Sainsbury’s propose to use the old Oak Inn building which has provided a sad dreary entrance to the town for many many years, at least 30 as far as I know. It would make the entrance to town far more welcoming.

I believe the council were minded to refuse this application. It is a great mistake to lose this opportunity. What else to they hope will happen there?

Do they hope someone will come forward to build flats or offices or another student hostel? Whatever might happen, cars will have to come and go. I believe their main objection is the number of car parking spaces provided. Sainsbury’s have done careful surveys and I think they should be believed. They must have similar stores elsewhere.

This store would provide an excellent facility for residents. I think that the complaint that it is unfair to local established businesses is a non-argument. Since when has business not been about competition? It makes all raise their game giving customers better choice.

It is a shame to let this building go on rotting for more decades. - J. Tindle, Leam Terrace, Leamington.
