Upside down rainbow was exciting

On Friday August 5 at about half past six, I was having my dinner in the garden and I spotted out of the corner of my eye a stripe of red in the sky.

I looked up and saw an upside down rainbow, which looked like the sky was smiling. I said to my mummy ‘I can see a rainbow’ and mum said ‘No you can’t it’s not raining!’.

Then she and grandma Rosemary and daddy looked up and we all saw it! I asked mummy what it was and she said it was the Cheshire cat having a joke by painting his teeth multi-coloured!

Upside down rainbows are very rare to see in England. They are common in the Arctic. They are made by the light of the setting sun being refracted by ice crystals in wispy clouds. Our upside down rainbow lasted for about six minutes, changing shape all the time - sometimes just red, sometimes just blue and sometimes just pink. It was very exciting! - Iona Wood (age six) with help from my mummy.
