White Van Man appears to be above the law

In transit to Snitterfield from Kenilworth, I was in the process of overtaking a couple of cars on the dual carriageway when a white van appeared behind me from nowhere.

I pulled over and observed I was doing 70mph and wondered what hurry the driver was in as he roared off up to the island over the M40. Pulling in to the turn-right lane, he pushed past several cars, but when he tried to go straight ahead a lorry cut off his exit and he had to wait.

Proceeding up the next dual carriageway he was blocked by slower vehicles overtaking. By swerving from side to side, inches from their rear bumpers, he intimidated them into allowing him to pass.

Roaring round the next island onto a two-way road, he first overtook two cars on double white lines and then another two over a central turning section.

I wondered how an individual could drive like this without any fear of apprehension or prosecution. But the very next day my pondering was answered in the Kenilworth Weekly News.

A van cuts up a car on an island and an altercation between the two drivers takes place. The van driver is less than pleased with the outcome and promptly reverses his van into the other protagonist’s car and drives off. All this is captured on CCTV as the car driver discovers when he reports the incident to the police.

Unfortunately, he was stupid enough to wave a baseball bat about during the altercation and was procecuted with all due diligence.

However, the van driver not only walked away unscathed, but was not prosecuted for his errant driving and using his van as a weapon, despite the police having all the evidence on film.

Obviously, van drivers are above the law, so when you are next subjected to white van driver abuse do not complain, as the police observe their behaviour as going about their normal business. Viva White Van Man! - M.J. Wheatley, John O’Gaunt Road, Kenilworth.
