Who is responsible for this situation?

It was interesting to read the headlines in the Courier last Friday concerning the district council, Ministry of Defence and Racing Club Warwick. Having read a copy of the confidential document it appears a few questions should be asked of our district councillors.

The document states that WDC will happily pay up to £400,000 to the MOD to avoid being taken to court, however, nowhere in the document do they actually ‘commit’ anything to Racing Club. They just hint they will try and help them find some funding, from somewhere. As someone that has followed this case for a while, this just seems to be yet another empty promise in an attempt to get their hands on Racing Club’s lease. The lease is the only bargaining chip that Racing Club have and, in my opinion, it would be complete folly to give it up without written assurances as to what they would receive in return.

It would be useful if any representatives from WDC could answer the following questions:

Who at the council was responsible for issuing two leases for the same property and do they still work there?

Has there been an investigation into potential criminal or civil fraud, as issuing two leases and collecting two rents on the same property appears to be fraud? What did the internal and external auditors have to say about this and were they actually informed?

Have the public and elected councillors been misled about what has happened with Racing Club and the cadets over the years, as the report in the paper implies?

I’m sure we will probably hear more of the same from WDC – we’re working hard with all parties concerned, we want a positive conclusion, we want Racing Club to be the hub of the community, we genuinely wish to broker an agreement that is equitable and fair to all parties.

Well talk is cheap.

Give the club back a building that is fit for purpose, something that the people of Warwick can be proud of and would be happy to support. Build the changing rooms that should have been built before any work was started on the cadets’ half of the building. Provide funding to cover the loss of earnings for the last few years, which occurred as a direct result of WDC actions.
