A campaign has been launched to get a new community centre in Warwick.

The campaign is being spearheaded by John Holland, who is a Warwickshire County councillor representing Warwick.

Cllr Holland said that an 'area needs assessment' has shown that a community centre is needed in the Cape Road and Packmores area of the town.

He also said that a community office was opened over ten years ago but the promise to develop this into a community centre by 2020 has not been delivered.

Cllr Holland said: "There is no community centre in this area but there are ones in other places in such as The Gap, Chase Meadows, Warwick Gates and the Woodloes.

"The Priory Medical Centre in Cape Road will be moving to new premises next year.

"The building vacated would be an ideal community centre.

"I have been looking for suitable premises that might become available and at the moment as the future is not decided for the surgery building - so this is the time to put in a bid.

"There is no point identifying needs unless action results.

"The Packmores Centre is an excellent start but we need a centre to meet the needs of new parents, our seniors and a youth club. This is a unique opportunity.

"I would be pleased to hear from people who want to work with us."

Warwick and Leamington MP Matt Western is also supporting the campaign.

Matt Western said: “For too long, the residents of Cape Road and The Packmores have been without a comprehensive community centre to provide a wide array of services that would benefit all.

"Our communities desperately need investment, and I would have expected the council and Government to have kept their promises to open a centre in this part of Warwick.

"I’m totally in support of a new community centre and will work with Cllr Holland and others to make it a reality.”

Warwickshire County Council have been contacted for a comment.
