Former long-serving Warwick councillor celebrates his 90th Birthday

A former long-serving Warwick councillor celebrated his 90th Birthday this week.

Gerry Guest, who was a councillor for the Myton and Heathcote ward, turned 90 on Thursday (October 15).

Gerry served as a councillor for more than 60 years.

He was first elected in 1957 in Castle Bromwich and then became chairman in 1960 – and at the time was the youngest parish council chairman in the country.

He was elected as a Warwick councillor in 1968 and served in this role for nearly 51 years.

During this time he also served as the town mayor three times and was district chairman in 1991.

Gerry also welcomed the Queen when she visited in 1997.

He also oversaw the delivery of the Heritage Lottery fund money to refurbish the Court House in Jury Street.

In 2019 Gerry was awarded an MBE and was also awarded the Freedom of the Town in 2016.

Cllr Terry Morris, the Mayor of Warwick, said: " It was an honour to drop in on Gerry Guest on his 90th birthday to wish him many happy returns on behalf of myself and my fellow town councillors past and present.

"Gerry was himself Mayor of Warwick on three occasions and was awarded the freedom of the town in 2016.

"I had the pleasure of first meeting Gerry in 2015 when I was a newly elected councillor and my resounding memory is of Gerry taking the time to make me and fellow new councillors, feel welcome and supported.

"I then had the pleasure of working alongside him until he stepped down in 2019.

"Many happy returns Gerry."
