Work might have started on the demolition of Biart Place, but for some residents the fond memories of their time spent living in the blocks will last for a lifetime.

The blocks were built in around 1968 and housed hundreds of Rugbeians for half a century.

Although in later years trouble began with anti-social behaviour and crime - many Rugbeians remember the blocks as a happy place to live.

Resident Shellie Taylor wrote to the Advertiser to share some fond memories of her time at Biart Place.

She wrote: "Reminiscing and feeling lucky.

"I had a lovely day with my granddaughter on Friday and feel fortunate to have her in my life.

"Whilst going for a walk by these flats I thought about the good memories of childhood I had living here.

"Yes even in the '60s and '70s they put single parents in these flats, I spent part of my childhood here with my dad.

"I loved it, we lived on the top - 10th floor, flat number 124.

"I remember playing on the roof, not that this was safe.

"We used to wave at the trains going passed.

"I remember my budgie called Joey escaping out the window.

"The rubbish chute was intriguing, we threw the rubbish in and it shot down to the ground floor.

"If you laid on the floor in the hallway you could look through the air vents and see the bedroom.

"I remember going round the park on my roller skates and I also remember when the Radio One roadshow came to Whinfield Rec.

"It wasn’t much fun in the power cuts though, having to walk up all those stairs in the dark, but I did have fun living there.

"I would love to go back inside and see my old home before they come down."

The blocks are currently being demolished floor-by-floor, with work expected to be complete in the next year - see www.rugbyadvertiser.co.uk/news/politics/council/demolition-rugbys-biart-place-set-start-within-weeks-heres-how-its-going-be-done-1364329 for more information.
