Proposed alterations to a Warwick sports club have sparked objections from neighbours worried about the impact the changes will have on their own homes and local wildlife.

A two-storey extension to the clubhouse at Warwick Boat Club, in Mill Lane, would see new changing facilities, additional office, social and storage space, a small gym and an extended and remodelled kitchen area.

There would also be two new squash courts, two new floodlit clay tennis courts, a replacement boathouse and an enlarged floodlit bowls green.

The proposal, which is to be considered by planners at Warwick District Council, also explains that there would be changes to the Banbury Road access.

The plans were submitted last month and nearby residents have until May 18 to make comments - but a number who live in Bridge End, which lies opposite Warwick Boat Club on the other side of the River Avon, have already been in touch.

Resident Anthony Bratby said that there were already parking issues in the area. He explained: “We, as residents of Bridge End, have to suffer rower's cars parking from 7am onwards, waking us up and preventing residents from parking near their homes.

"This application will encourage more members into the club and give us more parking problems.

“Also no mention is made of the retention of the tree/hedge screen which at present exists on the river side of the boathouse. The new boathouse is much larger - the club is trying to get a quart into a pint pot.”

Neighbour Ian Fergusson added: “There needs to be a measure in place to provide some natural screening.

"Privacy is a major concern as our garden is directly opposite the bowling green. With the bowling area being floodlit it will have an adverse effect on my family's privacy.

“I appreciate bowls is not the noisiest of pastimes but the increased chatter and number of potential extra games will affect the quiet of the river.

"This part of the river presently has nesting swans, moorhens, ducks, bats and the occasional kingfisher. It is concerning that the light and activity will have an effect on their natural habitat.”

In a letter to planners, the chairman of the club’s development group, Geoff Prince, explained that members hoped the alterations would have a positive impact on the area.

He said: “We recognise that Warwick Boat Club occupies a unique and sensitive site located within an area of exceptionally high visual quality within the Warwick Conservation Area overlooked by Warwick Castle and adjoined by the River Avon and listed buildings along Mill Street and Bridge End.

“In promoting improved facilities our members are keen to ensure that any changes will have a positive impact on the club and its surroundings, and at the same time will deliver high quality sporting facilities in response to lifestyle changes, legislative requirements and rapid population growth in the Warwick area.”
