The smash, which happened at about 3pm, has closed the A426 Lutterworth road at Bitteswell causing major local rush-hour disruption.

One person was “assisted” out of a car by firefighters while a second person had to be “extricated” from a vehicle, a Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said.

It’s not known how seriously they were injured in the accident.

“The road has been closed as Harborough District Council clears up debris from the highway,” said the fire spokeswoman just before 5pm.

She said the regional air ambulance also attended but was stood down.

Three fire appliances, from Lutterworth, Leicester-based Southern Station and Wigston, raced to the scene along with police and ambulances.
