Warwick and Leamington MP says 'enough is enough' and calls for knife crime to be tackled after murder in Leamington

The MP for Warwick and Leamington has said that 'enough is enough' and that knife crime needs to be tackled after a man died from a stab wound in Leamington.

Last Friday (May 29) police launched a murder investigation after a man was stabbed on May 28 in Lower Leam Street near Leam Terrace. The man – who was from Coventry – later died in hospital.

Following the launch of the investigation MP Matt Western is calling for knife crime to be tackled.

He said: “Once more I am shocked and saddened by this tragic loss of life on our streets.

"My thoughts are with the loved ones of the victim. I’ve been liaising with the police on this matter and would like to thank them for their professionalism in dealing with the incident.

“Unfortunately, this is the latest in a series of murders - the second in five months and third in just over a year.

"Knife crime is abhorrent and must be tackled. Twice I’ve raised this in Parliament, on both occasions calling for real action against local knife crime.

“I’ve written to the Police and Crime Commissioner to ask why we are seeing such criminality and what is being done, as well as continuing my lobbying for higher Police budgets from the Government. If they don’t act, I fear this won’t be the last.

"Enough is enough.”

A number of arrests have been made in connection with the murder investigation.

On Friday (May 29) a 27-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman, who was from Birmingham were arrested.

The 27-year-old man was released was released with no further action to be taken.

The 34-year-old woman is still be questioned.

Over the weekend three men from Birmingham, aged 21, 22 and 26 were arrested on suspicion of murder.

On Monday (June 1) a 29-year-old man from Birmingham was arrested on suspicion of murder.

On Tuesday (June 2) a 34-year-old woman from Birmingham was released on bail.

On Wednesday (June 3) three men from Birmingham, aged 21, 22 and 26, who were all arrested over the weekend have now been released on bail and a 29-year-old man from Birmingham who was arrested on Monday (June 1) remains in police custody.
