A hospital radio DJ from Warwick is using his love of music to get through the coronavirus pandemic.

Award-winning volunteer producer Stephen Height, 36, who broadcasts to patients at Warwick Hospital’s Radio Warneford, says listening to favourite tracks and recording future shows while temporarily off air is helping him banish cabin fever during lock down.

Stephen said: “It’s not easy getting used to working from home but it’s great to be able to look after my parents in between choosing songs for my Tuesday evening show Viva La Radio when it’s up and running again.

“As a hospital radio volunteer, I must thank and praise the wonderful NHS staff, not just in Warwickshire, but across the whole country who are doing the most amazing work during what is the most challenging phase in their careers.

“Let us keep applauding them as they care for those who are greatly affected by this terrible disease. We will get through this and may the power of faith and music enable us to do that."

Stephen joined the station four years ago and works full time as a 'business support officer' in Warwick, meeting patients, collecting their music requests and introducing them on his live show are his favourite aspects of his volunteer role.

"Volunteering is a really satisfying way of serving the community both by visiting the patients and by participating in our annual fundraising events," said Stephen. “The best feeling for me is hearing a patient on my rounds saying “thank you for what you do, it is really appreciated."

“If the show brings makes a patient’s hospital stay happier, then I know I’ve done my job well.”

While staff and patients at Warwick Hospital are still able to enjoy pre-recorded 24-hour online radio programmes, Stephen says he can’t wait to get back behind his mic.

Stephen’s top ten songs for his programme 'Viva La Radio':

1) Queen - Radio Ga Ga

2) The Selector - On My Radio

3) Edwin Starr - H.A.P.P.Y Radio

4) Cliff Richard - Wired For Sound

5) The Carpenters - Yesterday Once More

6) Dire Straits - Skateaway

7) Sheena Easton - Voice On The Radio

8) Don Williams - Listen To The Radio

9) The Buggles - Video Killed The Radio Star

10) Elvis Costello and The Attractions - Radio Radio
