‘Raising parking fees might not be the answer’

FEARS that raising parking charges might worsen a shortfall in income from parking were discussed at Leamington town hall on Wednesday.

Warwick District Council’s executive committee was told the authority faces an estimated £206,000 shortfall in parking revenue due to a fall in shoppers.

Cllr Jane Knight (Lab, Leamington Brunswick) said the finance and audit scrutiny committee had been “very concerned” about rising fees.

She said: “We want to encourage more footfall and putting charges up as a remedy to the difficulty is not a good one.”

Cllr Dave Shilton (Con, Kenilworth Park Hill) said it was “not really true” that the council kept raising fees, adding the matter was being looked at seriously.
