Record-breaking year for A-level students in south Warwickshire

At Trinity School in Leamington, the achievements were the best to date, with 57 per cent of pupils having gained A* to B grades - a leap of eight per cent from last year - and every single pupil gaining A* to E grades.

There was also a significant increase in the average points scored per candidate and per entry at 851 and 227 respectively.

Headteacher Chris Gabbett said: “I am extremely proud of the sixth form students who have worked so hard to enable this success. Particular thanks is to their teachers and parents who have applied so much and to Matt Alton, Barbara Kirkby and Laura Murphy, who have been so instrumental in enhancing Trinity’s sixth form.”

The 112 A-level students at North Leamington School achieved an overall pass rate of 99 per cent and an A* to B pass rate of 45 per cent. The school’s average point score per entry improved again, showing a three-year positive trend.

Excellent individual performers included Phillip Smith, who gained three A*s in maths, further maths and physics and an A in chemistry, and Joanne Bywater, who gained two A*s in geography and psychology and an A in maths.

Headteacher Joy Mitchell said: “I am delighted with the continued improvement in performance of this year’s A-level students - they have continued to exceed expectations. These results will stand our students in good stead during this continued difficult period for both university entrance and employment prospects.”

Southam College’s headteacher said he was once again “thrilled” by the performance of the school’s sixth form students.

At A-level, more than 40 per cent gained A* to B grades, while at AS-level, the school broke all previous records with an A* to E pass rate of 98 per cent.

Headteacher Ranjit Samra said: “These fantastic results are testimony to the hard work of our students, teachers and parents and build upon the improvements made in recent years.”

Students at Warwickshire College beat the college’s results for last year with a 98.3 per cent pass rate – nearly three per cent higher than in 2012.

Students also achieved better results in their AS levels, with a pass rate of 80 per cent, up more than five per cent from last year. Students achieved a 100 per cent pass rate in 14 A-level subjects and in six AS-level subjects.

Kenilworth School’s sixth form students also achieved an excellent set of results. Thirty-nine per cent of A-level results were at A* or A grades, 71 per cent were A*to B grades, 90 per cent were A* to C and 99 per cent were A* to E. Eight students obtained places at either Oxford or Cambridge Universities.

Head of sixth form Nick Mummery said: “We are delighted with these brilliant results. They reflect the hard work of a fantastic year group.”

Headteacher Hayden Abbott added: “These are a phenominal set of results. We congratulate all students for their well-deserved success. All the work that staff have done to support our students along the way has really paid dividends.

“We wish the students well in their further studies and careers.”

At Aylesford School in Warwick, teachers were delighted with the performance of their A-level students - everyone of them secured at least a pass grade.

Seventy-five per cent gained passes at A* to C grade and of those, 45 per cent scored A* and B grades.

Individual triumphs included Lorena Vinuesa, who secured four A grades, Shannon Neill, who earned an A* and two As, Michael Guise, who one gained an A*, an A and a B and Peter Stiggers, who scored three As.

Headteacher Steve Hall said: “We are delighted with the performance of our students who sat their A-level examinations last summer.

“Well done to all who have positioned themselves well as they move on in their careers.”

At the independent girl’s school, King’s High in Warwick, the pass rate at A* to B grades was an outstanding 87.6 per cent. Of the 85 girls sitting the exams, there were 57.5 per cent achieving A* to A grades.

Headteacher Elizabeth Surber said: “We are very proud of our girls and their teachers for the hard work and diligence which are reflected in these excellent results.”

Among the particular successes was Sarah Williams, who gained four A*s, while four other pupils achieved three A*s and seven achieved A* to A grades. Twenty-six of the girls achieved one or more A*s.

There were record-breaking results at Myton School in Warwick, where 124 students sat A-level and other Level 3 qualifications, which all offer access to university, apprenticeships and employment.

Headteacher Paul MacIntyre said the overall pass rate was 100 per cent, but a new record had been set with 31 per cent of pupils achieving A* to A level passes and 67 per cent A* to B. The school achieved an 86 per cent pass rate at A* to C grades.

Mr MacIntyre said: “We are delighted that another year 13 cohort at Myton has earned high grades in very academic and challenging qualifications. Over two thirds of all results achieved by our students were A*, A or B grade and it is unsurprising therefore that our average points score per entry is higher than it has ever been - in excess of 220.”

Mr MacIntyre said there were particular A* to B successes in the areas of maths and science, including an 83 per cent maths pass rate at A* to B. Among individual students, Jonathan Pawson achieved four A* passes and Rachel Barton three A*s and an A.

At independent Warwick School, over half the grades were A* to A with five boys achieving four A*s each.

New head teacher Gus Lock said: “We had an 84 per cent pass rate at A* to B and 36 of the 131 boys who sat the exams achieved three or more A*s or As.

“I’m delighted that the sustained hard work and commitment of pupils and staff has been rewarded with these excellent A levels.”

Campion School in Leamington achieved its best ever A-level results with a 100 per cent pass rate. 94 per cent of pupils achieved at least 3 A* to E grades at A-level or equivalent subjects. 42 per cent of all entries were graded A* or A and 75 per cent graded A* to C. Several students will move on to undergraduate courses at top universities.

Headteacher Mark Feldman said: “We are delighted for our Year 13 pupils who have achieved so well.

“Our students benefit from very good teaching, small class sizes and excellent teacher-student relationships. We are particularly pleased that so many of our students will now progress to top universities or very good jobs.”

Campion students that have secured places at top universities include Joe Gillfillan who will study engineering at Oxford University after achieving an A* in mathematics and further mathematics and A grades in chemistry, physics and biology and Ellie Bonser and Manpreet Kaur, who will both go on to Birmingham University.

Out of the 81 upper sixth formers at the independent Princethorpe College, the overwhelming majority have gained entry into the universities of their choice and nearly 30 per cent of all grades are at A* or A, while 65 per cent of all grades at B or better.

The top performer was Rhiannon Edwards, with four A*s and an A grade and an A* in her extended project.

Headmaster Ed Hester said: “These results just pip last year’s record with more students achieving the very highest grades. This is a year group which has worked exceptionally hard and I am delighted they have been rewarded for their outstanding efforts and wish them well for the future.”

Girls at the independent girl’s school, the Kingsley School in Leamington are celebrating some of the best ever A-level results achieved at the school, with 74 per cent gaining A* to B grades.

The overall pass rate was 100 per cent, with 33 per cent of students gaining A* and A grades and 87 per cent of students achieving grades A* to C.

Among the individual successes at Kingsley is Anna Laws from Wellesbourne, who gained A* grades in maths and physics and grade A in Latin. Jasmine Tooke of Lighthorne achieved three A grades in biology, economics and maths.

Kingsley’s headteacher Heather Owens said she is “delighted but not surprised” by the results, which are improving year on year. She added: “Our sixth form is going from strength to strength, with excellent academic results, fabulous new facilities opening at the start of term and our biggest intake for several years into year 12 this September.”

Students at Kineton High School performed better than ever this year, with 20 per cent of entries scoring A* or A grades, with 42 per cent achieving A* to B, and an overall pass rate of 98 per cent.

Headteacher Julia Morris said: “We are thrilled with these outstanding results which reflect the hard work and dedication of the students and the staff.”
