Royal to visit Kenilworth next year?

Other ideas discussed included getting English Heritage on board to work with schools in the build-up to the anniversary, which falls on June 21.

Cllr Dave Shilton proposed that the council should write to Buckingham Palace to request that they send a member of the Royal Family to commemorate the anniversary, which members thought was a good idea.

Cllr John Cooke lived in Kenilworth during the 700th anniversary as a child and recalled some of his memories.

He said: “I was eight years old when I first came to this town in 1966, and the anniversary of the siege was a big issue back then.

“All the schools took part in various activities and there was a whole lot of stuff going on.

“I think it’s important that we mark this event and we should liaise with the castle, schools and the Kenilworth Town Centre Partnership.”

It is hoped that all schools in the area will benefit from the anniversary.

Cllr Richard Hales said: “I think it’s vital that English Heritage work with not just some schools but all schools in the area, both secondary and primary.

“It would be a huge disappointment if English Heritage missed this opportunity.”

Members discussed the importance of setting up a committee to organise the event.

Cllr Pat Cain said: “A committee should be set up sooner rather than later and we need to start arrangements already.”

The siege of Kenilworth took place in 1266 when rebels inside the castle held out for six months before surrendering to Prince Edward’s forces.
