Scammers tell elderly Warwickshire residents ‘your grandson is in custody’ in bid to get details

Two people from Rugby reported being called on Monday (August 17) and a further two people from Warwick reported being called on Tuesday (August 18).

On each occasion the scammers purported to be from the police in London and claimed that the victim’s had a grandson who was in custody for cloning bank cards, or stealing money from the victims account.

The scammers typically target elderly people, and have on a couple of occasions asked the victims to contact Action Fraud to report the crime, but have remained on the line in order to obtain bank details.

In the past, scammers have been known to send a courier to collect the bank cards after obtaining the bank details.

Fortunately each of the victims over the past couple of days have realised this is a scam and have not handed over any details.

Police are issuing the following advice:

> Do not hand out any personal details over the phone.

> If you receive a call like this, please hang up immediately and call 101 from a different phone. If there is a crime in progress, please call 999.
