Shining like new, historic jet plane comes home

ONE of the earliest surviving jet fighters came home this week when it landed at Coventry Airport in Warwickshire.

The world’s oldest operational twin jet Gloster Meteor T7 (G-BWMF) touched down at the airport’s Airbase aviation museum on Wednesday.

The plane has had a 20-year, £500,000 renovation and has been repainted in its original training aircraft colour scheme by a team from Kemble Airfield near Bristol.

It was flown from RAF Odiham by test pilot Dan Griffiths, who undertook trials of the aircraft a month ago.

The Gloster Meteor was the first jet fighter, made following years of development by Sir Frank Whittle in Rugby. The T7 was based on the F4, many of which were manufactured at Armstrong Whitworth in Baginton.
