Student aims to raise money to help youngsters with cancer

A LEAMINGTON student is hoping individuals and businesses in the area will help her raise funds for a charity that supports young people with cancer.

Jessica Palandri, in her final year at Warwick University, has been given a ‘virtual badge’ by charity Trekstock.

From Monday she will have three weeks to come up with a product of value to auction on eBay for the charity – which she is to obtain by trading the badge for another product and trading that for another worth more money, then repeating the process until the three weeks are up.

Jessica, who has her sights set on gaining a three-month internship with Trekstock this summer, said: “I am hoping businesses in the area will he interested in helping me and I am aiming to have a product worth at least £100 – but more than that would be wonderful.”

The ‘trade off’ is the first stage of the process open to internship applicants. Jessica must also submit an application form and be selected for an interview before she is successful in gaining the position.

She said: “The internship will give me experience in fundraising and events and volunteer management and hopefully lead on to a job.”

Trekstock, which was launched in March 2010, funds research into cancers that affect teenagers and young adults and is currently supporting Cancer Research UK’s work on Hodgkin’s lymphoma. It also supports young people affected by cancer through music, fashion and art collaborations and organising trekking experiences. Its patron is the muscian Mark Ronson.
