Students are trekking from John O’Groats to Land’s End for Cancer Research UK

TWO students who have set off on a long-distance charity trek have experienced the generosity of others along the way.

Tolga Necar, 21, who lives in Newbold Terrace East, Leamington, and his friend Ben Walshe, also 21 and of Park Lane, Harbury, are currently walking from John O’Groats to Land’s End on a shoestring budget to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Not only does the journey include walking from the UK’s furthest points from one to another but it also involves the friends visiting the furthermost north and south points - Dunnet Head and Lizard’s Point respectively.

Having set off three weeks ago, Mr Necar spoke to the Courier on Wednesday while the pair were near Loch Lomond - 300 miles into their ten-week, 1,000-mile journey.

He said: “We have been so lucky with the people we have met along the way and we’ve been able to wild camp, which is legal in Scotland, and have asked farmers if we can stay on their land.

“On one of the days a lady came out with some cold ciders and a cake for us and sent us away the next day with two rump steaks.

People have been so generous.”

Mr Necar, who is in the second year of a politics with internal relationships degree at York University, and Mr Walshe , who has just completed a philosophy degree in Bristol, are aiming to reach their destination by Saturday September 24.

The former Warwick School pupils have already raised more than £2,000 for the cause.

Mr Necar said: “The sad thing is that these days you have to go a long way to find somebody who doesn’t know a family member or friend who has suffered from cancer.

“Everything we can do to help those working to stamp it out is of infinite value.

“The challenge is not a glamorous one, walking the length of a nation is a relatively slow process, but it is nonetheless a gruelling one.” www.justgiving.com/walktheuk
