Tonnes of metal, motorbikes and a safe are dredged from canal

Tonnes of metal, and the odd motorbike, were dredged out of the Grand Union Canal, as part of the regular clean-up.

Despite the damp conditions, more than 80 volunteers turned out to clean the stretch of canal between Emscote Road and Wedgnock Lane, Warwick, an event organised by the Warwickshire Branch of the Inland Waterways Association (IWA) with support of the Canal and River Trust (CRT). The predominant items retrieved from the canal were bicycles and shopping trolleys, but also included three motorcycles, lengths of carpet, electronic equipment and a safe.

These, and litter on the side of the canal,were gathered up and loaded onto the hopper boat driven by Steve Lambert the CRT volunteer leader. IWA would like to thank the students from Warwick University, the army cadets who had travelled from Stourport, plus the local residents and families that gave their assistance.
