Update: Appeal over fatal crash which left mother in critical condition

Ambulance crews were called to the Coventry Road just after 11am on November 8 after two family cars collided, leaving a couple trapped while passers by tried to save their daughter.

A red Skoda was travelling along the B4642 from Rugby when it collided with a white Kuga travelling in the opposite direction.

Emergency crews arrived to find the young girl in cardiac arrest and being given CPR by passers by. Resuscitation efforts continued in an ambulance but she was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.

The girl’s brother, aged 18-months, suffered a head injury and was also rushed to hospital for emergency treatment.

The children’s parents, both aged 22, were trapped in the wreckage of their Skoda and had to be cut free from the car by fire crews.

The father and baby are in a stable condition, but the mother, who was a passenger in the front seat, remains in a critical condition in hospital.

All four members of the family travelling in the Kuga, including a 30-year-old woman, 37-year-old man, 10-year-old boy and seven-year-old girl, were taken to hospital but suffered only minor injuries.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: “When ambulance staff arrived they found two cars which had been involved in a significant collision.

“Ambulance staff immediately took over resuscitation efforts for the young girl and quickly transferred her by land ambulance on blue lights to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire.

“CPR continued en route to hospital but sadly, despite best efforts nothing could be done to save her and she was confirmed dead at hospital.

“A young boy from the same car suffered a head injury.

“He was given immediate treatment on scene before he too was taken by land ambulance to the same hospital.

“The mother suffered pelvic and abdominal injuries and the father had upper limb injuries. Both were given pain relief and immobilised before being taken to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire.

“In the second car, the family of four had less serious injuries.

“Their mother and father suffered seatbelt related injuries and all four were taken to the same hospital by land ambulance as a precautionary measure.”

The road was closed until 6pm with air ambulance, fire crews and police all in attendance during the day.

Warwickshire Police are now appealing for help piece together the events that lead up to the collision from anyone who was in the area at the time.

They are particularly keen to speak to two pedestrians who were at the scene and may have information.
