A third car, a Kia Piccanto then hit the Volvo at the scene near the Crab Mill between Preston Bagot and Claverdon.

A man, aged 78, was trapped in the Mercedes, and suffered a number of shoulder and leg injuries.

Two people in their 50s who were in the Kia were injured but did not require hospital treatment.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: “Crews found two cars that had both suffered very significant front end damage.

“Sadly, there was nothing that could be done to save the driver of one car and he was confirmed dead at the scene.

“A man in his late 70s from the other car was trapped. He had suffered possible fractures to his shoulder, wrist and ankle on the left side.

“He was taken to the major trauma centre at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham by ambulance.

“There were a man and a woman in their 50s in the third vehicle. They were assessed, but discharged at the scene.”

Warwickshire Police is now appealing for witnesses or anyone who saw the cars that evening to help piece together events.

Anyone with information can contact officers on 101.
