Update: Police appeal to hundreds of potential witnesses after fatal crash

Rowan Fitzgerald from Leamington was killed after the Stagecoach service veered into the supermarket.

Pedestrian, Dora Hancox from Nuneaton who was in her 70s was also killed when the Stagecoach double decker bus crashed at around 6pm.

Rowan’s eight-year-old cousin was rushed to Birmingham Children’s Hospital with severe injuries but is now in a stable condition.

Five others suffered injuries after the bus lost control along Hale Street and hit a number of stationary cars and a lamppost before crashing into the city centre supermarket.

The bus driver, a 77-year-old man is helping police with their inquiries but no arrests have been made.

He has been reported as being Kailash Chander, former mayor of Leamington but this has not been confirmed by Stagecoach who said they will not speculate on the cause of the crash until full investigations are complete.

And police are now making a renewed plea for witnesses to come forward, no matter how little information they have.

Inspector Paul Bennett from West Midlands Police said: “This was a major crash and we know that there were people in the area at the time who are still yet to speak to our officers.

“I would ask those people to come forward now. They may not realise it but they may have a vital piece of information which nobody else holds.

“This along with the trawl of CCTV footage and tests at the scene could make all the difference to this ongoing investigation.”

Dora Hancox was in Trinity Street when she was killed in the collision.

The bus driver and four other people were taken to University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire.

A man in his twenties suffered a broken arm, a second man suffered minor leg injuries, a woman in her sixties was treated for leg and arm injuries and a man was checked by hospital staff for a minor injury.

The supermarket was cordoned off and the city was subject to a number of road closures over the weekend.
