Village beer fest ‘keeps growing’

SOME 25,000 pints of real ale were served up to thirsty customers at the Long Itchington Beer Festival over the bank holiday weekend.

And that’s before counting all the lagers, ciders, wines, spirits, soft and hot drinks enjoyed by crowds at the four-day event.

Now in its fifth year, the festival attracted people from all over the country and - despite disappointing May temperatures and a very wet bank holiday Monday, organisers from the six participating pubs say more people than ever before must have visited their establishments.

Nigel Jones, who runs the Buck and Bell, said: “Going by the number of drinks sold, I would estimate that there must have been around 10,000 people who came over the four days.

“It’s growing every year. We don’t do anything to push it any harder, but it just grows organically. It must be by word of mouth.”

Mr Jones said the most popular beverage at his pub was a Shropshire beer called Salopian Lemon Green, but people were able to choose from around 150 ales from specialist breweries from around the country.

He added: “It’s an awful lot of work, but it is all worthwhile.”
