Warwick offers free open-air family films

Despite the disappointment of not being able to stage a full film festival in the summer, the team from Warwick Rocks has come up with a late Christmas cracker.

At 3pm in Market Place on Sunday they will be staging a free open-air showing of Disney’s latest blockbuster, Frozen.

And if that’s not festive enough, at 6pm there will be a screening of the hilarious Will Ferrell film, Elf.

Earlier this year Jack Linstead, founder of the Warwick Rocks group, was saddened to have to cancel the August Bank Holiday festival after the district council ruled it could not go ahead in the open air.

This was because the Film Board classification of The Goonies and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, meant they might cause offence to children who happened to be passing the public square.

It is hoped the summer event will run again next year but in the meantime the core Warwick Rocks trio want to reproduce some of the magic of last Christmas when some 2,000 people took blankets and chairs along to the main square.

Jack said: “The square will once again be closed to traffic and we suggest families bring folding chairs and wear warm clothing.”

Jack, along with John Martin and Paul Evans, his voluntary partners in Warwick Rocks, are delighted that members of the Old Leamingtonians’ Ladies team have agreed to steward the event. Those who arrive early can also see a short film about the Old Leamingtonians’ Rugby For Heroes Festival that is held on their Leamington ground every May.

The events team at the district council, along with Phillips 66, Baxi, and a host of other volunteers are backing the day, while street food will include stalls like Spectacular Goat, selling wood fired sourdough pizza, South African Bunny Chow, Indian specialities and gourmet hot dogs.
