And despite not taking the win for the 50 kilometre race, women from the dedicated team won a prize for being the fastest ladies boat in a men’s category.

The group made the trip after signing up for a 92 kilometre challenge over two weeks on the water to raise funds for Medicines Sans Frontiers -a group helping Syrian refugees.

A crew from the Düsseldorf team came to Warwick in September to join the town’s team for the gruelling 50km marathon race from Lincoln to Boston.

This month the German club repayed the hosting favour so they could both take part in the 42km Rhine Marathon and complete the distance.

Completed in traditional German ‘gig’ style rowing, boats came from all over the world to compete on the water in a wave on new and tough conditions.
