We all know about the glittering Bafta film awards, but schoolboy Adam Oliver has been shortlisted for a prize in a special category that celebrates creativity in the computer games industry.

At his home in Warwick Gates, 15-year-old Adam has been successfully fighting off invasions by aliens for the past three years.

Now his unique drag and drop game, AlienX, has been selected as one of eight contenders in the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (Bafta) Young Game Designers of the year Game-Making category.

Right now a jury of industry professionals and celebrity gamers are working their way through the shortlist in time for the ceremony on July 12, when the young winner will be announced alongside all the major film awards.

But two people who are certainly not on the judging panel are Adam’s father and uncle, Andrew and Philip Oliver, who back in the 1990s set up the hugely successful Blitz Games in Leamington.

Oliver, a pupil at Warwick School, said: “I was really pleased to learn my game has made it through to the finals - especially as I’ve had no help from my dad. AlienX is a concept I came up with the first time I entered the Young Game Designers competition three years ago. I’m really proud to say I put the whole thing together entirely on my own, having recently taught myself how to use GameMaker.”

Adam’s mother, Lynne, said: “He’s worked very hard.”
