Warwickshire College launches career academy

A new project aimed at helping young people find the right jobs for them is being launched by Warwickshire College.

Businesses in the area are being invited to get involved in the college’s Career Academy, which will see 16 to 19-year-olds enrol in a two-year work programme alongside their A-level studies.

The college is hoping to be able to offer students the opportunity to meet professionals in industries of interest to them, work with mentors and on internships, attend seminars led by employees from firms in the area and visit staff in their places of work.

Businesses, whose staff will also be invited to join an advisory board, can offer as little or as much commitment as they are able.

Sarah Ranson from the college said: “By working together we can help students move on to meaningful careers with the right skills that employers value.

“Working with Warwickshire College on the Career Academy will also benefit businesses through development opportunities for staff, talent spotting future employees, contributing to the local economy and most importantly giving something back.”

Around the UK, 4,000 employee volunteers from more than 1,400 organisations - both large and small-scale - contribute time and skills to the Career Academy programme.

Some volunteers have a long history of working in business, while others have just graduated from university.

Businessmen and women interested in finding out more and meeting teachers and students can attend the Career Academy launch at the college’s Trident Centre in Poseidon Way, Warwick Gates, tonight (Tuesday) from 5.30pm to 7pm.

There will be another event at the college’s Rugby centre on Thursday June 27 from 5.30pm to 7pm.
