Warwickshire County Council signs covenant with armed forces

WARWICKSHIRE County Council leader Alan Farnell reminded everyone of the debt owed to Britain’s armed forces as troops paraded through Warwick on Saturday.

Cllr Farnell was there to join with Brigadier Mark Banham, commander of the 143 (West Midlands Brigade) in officially signing a Community Covenant document designed to help both serving and former armed services personnel settle back into civilian life when the time came.

Among those marching from Pageant Gardens and up Church Street were some 25 uniformed air cadets along with staff from the Warwickshire and Birmingham Wing Air Training Corps and the award-winning Corps of Drums of 121 (Nuneaton) Squadron.

Cllr Farnell said: “All of us in the UK owe a great debt to our armed forces personnel, past and present.”

Brigadier Banham, MBE, said: “This covenant is a formal recognition of the close relationship that exists between the county and the military community that lives within it.

“We will work to facilitate the partnership and thereby seek to reduce some of the disadvantages that can be experienced by service personnel and their families because of the demands of service life.”
