Warwickshire’s youth orchestra and chorale will face challenge

DESPITE an £850,000 cut to his budget, the director of the County Music Service had pledged to continue providing opportunities for young musicians to practise on a regular basis.

Andrew Atkins acknowledges that fears about the break-up of the Warwickshire Youth Orchestra have been rife, especially after the loss of conductor Colin Touchin and manager Michael Williamson.

Mr Atkins admits: “Inevitably we have had to make changes to reduce our costs, but we have tried to do this in a way to increase our offer, provide greater opportunities for all, and at the same time maintain high-quality teaching and performance.”

Instead of meeting together weekly, the string section of the orchestra will mainly researse separately from the wind, brass and percussion sections, only coming together for special performances.

Mr Atkins added: “It is with regret that we have not been able to retain the orchestra’s excellent director, Colin Touchin, but we hope to draw on his expertise in future collaborations and performances.”

Cllr Heather Timms, who is responsible for children, young people and families at Warwickshire County Council, said: “Our county groups have forged a great national reputation and we want to build on these successes, not take away the opportunity.

“The changes to rehearsal schedules have been necessary to allow the groups to continue, but there are other benefits as the longer sessions will allow students to really focus on the music and hone their talents.”

The Rock and Pop Institute will operate only on a course basis with applications made directly to Gigzone.

Existing members of all nine county groups need not audition, Any new applicants will be invited to attend the first rehearsal of their chosen group in September.

Fees for membership of the orchestra have risen from £100 to £125 a year with other ensembles, such as County Brass, costing £30. As in previous years, subsidies are available and membership remains free to eligible pupils under the remissions scheme.
