Who would be your MP if proposed boundary changes go ahead?

PLANS to redraw MPs’ constituencies in Warwickshire have been announced.

The changes, drawn up by the independent Boundary Change Commission, would reduce the number of MPs in England from 533 to 502 and save £12 million.

They are the second part of a deal between Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats that also included May’s referendum on voting reform.

A 12-week public consultation has begun.

Some Labour MPs have accused the Government of gerrymandering as the proposals would reduce a pro-Labour bias in the existing system. Labour seats are on average smaller, meaning the party needs fewer votes nationwide to win a majority in the House of Commons.

If the changes went ahead, it is estimated the changes would result in 14 fewer Labour seats, 10 fewer Liberal Democrats and six fewer Conservatives, but hitting the Tories’ coalition partners the most.

In Warwickshire, the map would stay blue, but the ‘croissant-shaped’ constituency of Kenilworth and Southam, created for the last election, would be no more.

In its place, Rugby MP Mark Pawsley (Con) would find Southam on his patch and with it a number of villages affected by the proposed HS2 rail link from London to Birmingham.

There could be a showdown between current Kenilworth and Southam MP Jeremy Wright and environment secretary Caroline Spelman (Meriden) for a new Kenilworth and Dorridge seat including Stoneleigh, Leek Wootton and Lapworth.

Cubbington and Radford Semele and Claverdon and Snitterfield would find themselves in Chris White MP’s Warwick and Leamington constituency, the only changes to a seat that was reduced largely to the two towns in 2010.

One curious outcome would be that Ryton-on-Dunsmore, once a part of the Rugby and Kenilworth seat, would fall into the gravitational pull of distant Nuneaton, once a Labour seat but won at the last election by Conservative Marcus Jones.

Meanwhile, Wellesbourne, Kineton and Burton Dassett would find themselves back in the Stratford constituency currently held by MP Nadhim Sahawi (Con).
