BBC Breakfast presenter Bushell turns his hand to the ‘sport of equals’

Bushell’s has trialled more than 400 sports including foot golf, roller derby and rush hockey for his Saturday morning slot on BBC1.

And, building up to the tournament on April 19, Bushell journeyed to Rugby College to try out the sport under the guidance of Southam-based Weller.

“Rarely have I enjoyed a sport quite so much so quickly and segway polo is one to watch,” said Bushell.

“It’s one where those of any fitness level can take part, making it suitable for various purposes such as recreational hobbies, corporate team-building days or group parties.

“It’s also one in which players can excel relatively quickly and with little experience, whilst it won’t break the bank. This really is a sport of equals.”

Members of the Team GB and Team England squad were on hand to help put Bushell through his paces, with Weller impressed by how quickly the BBC presenter got to grips with sport.

“Bushell demonstrated how straightforward the sport of segway polo is,” said Weller.

“It took him just moments to get the hang of and by the end of the afternoon he was scoring more goals than even some of the polo players.

Weller added: “I’m looking forward to putting a league together imminently, so am inviting interested parties to get in touch - the more people who play, the better the league.”

Bushell’s piece is due to be broadcast tomorrow morning on BBC1.

 Established in the UK in 2014, segway polo has been catapulted into the forefront of the new and alternative sports sector.

Since no specific fitness level is required to play, anyone over 16 can take part and with all equipment provided, it makes the sport accessible to all and a ‘sport of equals’.

Similar to horse polo, hockey and bicycle polo, the game is rapidly growing in popularity and particularly in its home county of Warwickshire, so much so, that regular weekly practices are held in a variety of venues including the Alan Higgs Centre in Coventry and North Leamington School.
