Beddoes bows out in first round of worlds

Leamington-born Emma Beddoes narrowly lost out to fourth seed Madeline Perry in the first round of the World Championships in Rotterdam.

The Northern Irish woman won the first two games 11-8, 11-4 before Beddoes stormed back to take the next two, both to seven.

However, Perry claimed the decider 11-3 to move through to a second-round tie against Natalie Grinham.

Kenilworth’s Sarah-Jane Perry and Leamington-born Leonie Holt both bowed out in qualifying.

Perry overcame Nayelly Hernandez 11-2, 11-1, 11-6 in 18 minutes before exiting at the hands of world number 29 Nour El Sherbini.

A shock looked possible as Perry reached match-ball at 10-9 in the decider, but a string break as she tried to play the winning shot saved El Sherbini, who then went on to take the next two points.

Holt also started well in the qualifying section with a 12-10, 11-4, 11-4 victory over Cigany Sillevis.

However, she found New Zealander Kylie Lindsay too strong, going down 11-6, 11-6, 11-9.
