Warwick’s Horrocks improves his record with fine Triumph

Horrocks struggled to come to terms with Swift’s rangy southpaw style in the first round but a change of tactics helped him get back into the bout.

With Swift trying to keep Horrocks at long range, the Warwick boxer pushed forward, mixing right hands with left hooks to shade the second round and leave all to play for going into the final three minutes.

The more experienced Triumph boxer was expected to prevail in the last round, but the gutsy Horrocks piled on the pressure and clearly got the decision to leave his loss on the National Championships semi-finals as the only blemish on his record.

Warwick are now settled into their new home at the Gudwara on Tachbrook Park Drive and are looking for boxers to follow in Horrock’s footsteps.

Meanwhile, Cleary’s Gym’s Lewis Williams resumed his long-running battle with Solihull’s Lewis Phillips in Worcester last weekend.

The duo were tied together at two wins apiece going into the bout and there was little to separate the two fighters in the opening round, with Williams landing the cleaner shots and Phillips putting together some aggressive combinations.

The fight degenerated in the second and third rounds, with Phillips repeatedly holding his much taller opponent, but it was to be the Solihull boxer who got the nod from the judges.

However, Williams’ coach Edwin Cleary believes his charge was unlucky not to get the decision having given Phillips a standing count in the third.

“Maybe I’m looking through rose-tinted glasses,” said Cleary.

“But I think Lewis was the superior all-round boxer, he’s just not getting the decisions.

“I’m not expecting a phonecall for another rematch.”
