Championship third for rookie Varriale

Ladbroke karter Michael Varriale belied his inexperience to clinch third place in the Senior Rotax Max Karting Championship at Shenington Club.

Varriale, who has only been racing karts for four years, was second on points scored over the 12 rounds, but with only nine rounds counting towards the final total, he was forced to settle for third.

Nevertheless, the 18-year-old believes the result could have been even better but for a couple of pieces of misfortune.

“It was very close and all depended on the last round in December,” said Varriale, who finished on 419 points, 14 behind second-placed Michael Pugh.

“I had some good races over the year and a bit of bad luck as well with a crash bending my axle in one round and broken chain meaning I slipped from first to the back in another.”

Varriale picked up his trophy at Stratford Manor Hotel and there was further good news with Shenington Kart Club being awarded the Motor Sports Association Club of the Year award, earning £1,000 towards club funds.
