The tough event, based around the west of Worcester, spans 39.5 miles and takes in an undulating 17-mile loop before hitting the tough climbs of Stanford Bank and Ankerdine on the way back to the finish.

The wind did not hinder times significantly and with the rain breaking for the morning, riders would stay relatively dry.

As last year’s winner, Clinton was the last man off on his Trek Speed Concept, putting in a consistent performance throughout the circuit to slice 39 seconds off his previous time, finishing in 1hr 35min 32sec.

It put him almost five minutes clear of second-placed rider Dean Robson (Somerset RC) and was the third fastest time ever recorded in the event and only 86 seconds short of the nine-year-old course record.

Clinton would also clock the fastest times on both ascents by a significant margin to claim the climbs competition.

Clinton also took the team prize alongside Mike Vaughan Cycles teammates Jack O’Neill, who finished third in 1:43:02, and Liz Powell.
