Contrasting fortunes for Kerr in Spa double

The inaugural visit of Royal Leamington Spa’s ladies to St Barbara’s Coventry proved a fruitful one, with Elizabeth G Jones’ crushing 27-4 success helping her side to a 31-shot victory.

Jenny Wickens skipped a 25-13 win to consolidate the victory, with only a 19-15 reverse for Donna Kerr’s triple preventing the clean sweep.

Kerr bounced back three days later, however, skipping a 16-9 success as Leamington overturned a six-shot fifth-end deficit to beat hosts Coventry Halfways 55-46.

Cynthia Briggs skipped Isobel Cox and Chris Davison to a 28-18 win, while Jean Smithard suffered a 19-11 loss.

Rink wins for Malcolm Wickens (24-17) and Dick Allibon (26-16) failed to prevent Leamington’s men slumping to a 114-93 defeat at home to Bidford-on-Avon.

Whitnash’s anniversary celebrations carried on apace with a visit from a touring side of Lincolnshire vice-presidents.

Bob Cook (27-13) and Derek Owen (24-10) both enjoyed 14-shot winning margins as Whitnash eased past their hosts 120-92.

Dave Gibbons also tasted success - 22-13 - with Ken Dolby again holding his nerve to skip a narrow 19-18 win.

All six Whitnash rinks won their matches as the hosts earned a comprehensive 123-87 victory over The Grange.

Grev Reader skipped a 20-12 for the highest winning rink, but The Grange can look back ruefully on several close encounters which did not go their way.

Colin Haywood (20-13), N Walker (23-16), Les Clarkson (17-15), Hamish Crawford (24-19) and Graham Cluff (19-12) were the other successful Whitnash bowlers.

A 20-11 success for Nigel Roach’s rink could not prevent Lillington going down to a 132-100 defeat at Three Spires.

Malcolm Welsh, with a 21-19, was Lillington’s only other victor in the six-rink contest.
