Afghan refugees stun Leamington

A team of cricket-loving refugees from Afghanistan claimed another notable scalp recently when they beat a select XI formed from Leamington’s youth sides.

Formed by the Croydon-based charity Cricket for Change, with Phil Tufnell as president, the Afghan side had already beaten Eton and Ayr ahead of their visit to Arlington Road.

They set a punishing total of 245 for three, with Joseph Somra taking two wickets for Leamington, before restricting their hosts to 184 for nine, with Somra making 53 and Alex Phillips 41.

Leamington chairman Damian Dixon said: “It was an absolute pleasure to host the Afghan team.

“They were a great credit to their team, and to their country back home.”
