Depleted Racers getting cut adrift

Racers boss Lee Knight blamed the late withdrawal of five key players through injury and illness for Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Walsall Wood.

“The last change was at ten to three and it seems every man and his dog are against us,” said Knight.

“Two pulled out in the warm-up and if you take five players out of the side we are going to struggle.

“If I’d had the same side out against Walsall that I put out against Heather the week before there is no doubt we would have beaten them.”

Ryan Allmark opened the scoring for Walsall Wood in the 20th minute and despite Racing Club creating several half-chances after the break, a 75th-minute Mark Bandarak strike sealed the points for the home side.

With Pelsall Villa also winning, it means Racers are now six points adrift at the bottom of the Midland Combination Premier with games running out.

However, Knight remains optimistic he can lift his side out of the bottom two.

“We need to win five of the next 13 to get back into the mix and I know we can do it,” he said. “It’s just a case of keeping my best 11 or 12 together.”

Racers will be without Tyron Smith tomorrow for the trip to Castle Vale, with the striker expected to be out for the remainder of the season after damaging knee ligaments.
