Fixture pile-up takes its toll on Southam

SOUTHAM UNITED 0 BARTLEY GREEN 0

On a night when Heather St John’s were crowned imoSports Midland Combination champions, the fixture backlog took its toll on Saints as they played out a lacklustre draw in what was their 13th match since the beginning of March.

Looking for their third league win in a row, Saints welcomed back captain John Blunsom from injury and he provided them with their best chance in the opening 45 minutes with a perfectly placed corner that Luke Swinnerton went agonisingly close to converting.

Saints shaded the first half of a typical end of season affair, but it remained all square at the interval.

The visitors could have taken the lead in the 51st minute, but failed to capitalise on a mistake by Mark Cheung and Swinnerton also missed a golden opportunity for Saints when clear through, failing to get the ball under control.
